Varroa
Varroa is the scourge of bee keepers everywhere.
History In Australia
Australia had remained one of the last few countries to remain free of Varroa mite until somewhere around June 2022. Sentinel hives in the Port of Newcastle detected the mite for the first time triggering a massive response and containment effort from both industry and the NSW Government.
Whilst more recent investigations have suggested that Varroa may have been present for some months prior to this discovery, these are the first confirmed detections in this country.
The battle to contain Varroa continued for a 14 month period after which the response strategy switched to one of management in September 2023 after it was recognised that eradication was not possible.
A two year management plan continued to be executed until February 2026, and whilst the plan has now concluded resources created as part of this plan are still publically available.
Varroa mite infestations have since been discovered in all Eastern Australian states and territories.
